Psalms 51:15 NIV Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.
Prayer is often thought of as the opportunity to bring our list of wants and needs before God. And like any good counselor (“Jesus will be called Wonderful Counselor” Isaiah 9:6), He wants to hear what is troubling us, what burdens us, and what weighs us down. But God also promises, “your Father knows exactly what you need even before you ask” Matthew 6:8. It’s not what you don’t have but what you have already been given that really matters.
We are children of the most-high God, sons and daughters of the creator of heaven and earth, adopted as His own and receiving the Spirit of God (Romans 8:15). Since God freely offered His son up as the sacrifice for us all, he certainly won’t withhold anything else he has to give (Romans 8:32). Our real source of joy is not in what we don’t have but in what God has already given to us.
One of the greatest prayers in scripture that declares what God has already done for us is Psalm 23.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything that I need.” I thank you that your son Jesus, the Good Shepherd, has offered his life as a sacrifice for the sheep (John 10:11). The result of his sacrifice is your provision of everything I need for life and a continual relationship with you (2 Peter 1:3). I come to you today from a place of contentment and satisfaction. Thank You, Lord, I have everything I need right now. I will look to You, listen to Your voice, and follow Your leading.
“He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams.” I thank you for knowing where my true rest and blessing are found. For leading me into the quiet moments where your voice is clear, where you restore and refresh, bringing me your peace and goodness. You guide me continually, giving me living water and restoring my strength. You make me like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring. (Isaiah 58:11)
“He renews my strength, guiding me along right paths, bringing honor to his name.” I thank you Father for drawing me into your presence to be renewed. I choose to trust you, to put my hope in you, and wait for you to show me the right path. There I will gain new strength and renewed power, able to run and not become weary, walk and not grow tired (Isaiah 40:31). Then my life will reflect your goodness and faithfulness, bringing honor to your name.
“Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. You constantly protect and comfort me, preparing a feast for me in the presence of my enemies.”
I thank you for your protection over my life, your constant presence, and your immeasurable love that casts out all fear (1 John 4:8). You are my refuge, a sanctuary of safety, where I can run in and be safe in times of trouble. (Psalms 46:1)
“You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.” Thank you for pursuing me with your love, your favor, and your blessings. You have adopted me and called me your very own. You set your seal of ownership on me and put your Spirit in my heart as a deposit (2 Corinthians 1:22).
I pray today from a position of fulfillment, not a place of lack. I stand in your presence and your promises that I have everything I need today and in the future. Father, I surrender completely to you.
