Heirs

Galatians 4:7 NIV So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

If you have ever questioned whether you are eligible or qualified for God’s blessings, let scripture set the record straight. If you are a born-again believer in Christ Jesus, having declared with your mouth and believed with your heart that Jesus is Lord (Romans 10:9), you are a child of God and an heir to all that belongs to the Father. What a precious promise and amazing truth. Every promise in the Bible—every blessing, every benefit—belongs to you as an heir.

What does it mean to be made an heir by God? An heir refers to someone who inherits or is entitled to a rank, title, or office based upon hereditary position. The New Testament Greek word klēronomos is defined as one who receives his allotted possession by right of sonship. The sacrifice of Jesus, what He did for us on the cross, provides a glorious inheritance, making us sons and daughters of God. This inheritance is never based on our works or our deeds, but it is solely because of what Christ has done for us. Romans 8:16-17 GNT, “God's Spirit joins himself to our spirits to declare that we are God's children. Since we are his children, we are heirs to the blessings he keeps for his people, and we are co-heirs with Christ to what God has kept for him.”

So what are the blessings that God desires we inherit and possess as His sons and daughters? If we are co-heirs with Jesus, then God intends for us to possess and live in every spiritual blessing that Jesus did. Ephesians 1 states it clearly: (v3) “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.” Every spiritual blessing includes (v4) being chosen to be holy and blameless, (v5) adopted into His own family, (v7) redeemed and forgiven, (v8) showered with His kindness, (v8) given all wisdom and understanding, and (v9) His will revealed to us. We are united with Christ; we have received an inheritance from God (v11).

And it gets even better! Ephesians 2:6-7 tells us that God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms so that God might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. Constant fellowship with our Heavenly Father, receiving His love, compassion, peace, and provision at all times. 1 Peter 1:4 tells us this inheritance cannot be damaged or destroyed; it does not perish, wear out, or fade. It has been reserved and kept for us.

As you allow your view of yourself to be transformed into God’s view of you, then you begin to grasp what it means to be an heir of God. You will approach God differently for help, guidance, wisdom, and understanding. You are not standing and looking toward heaven, begging God for help, but you are seated with Jesus, next to the Father, clothed in righteousness, redeemed, with right standing. This changes not only how we approach God but also how we receive from Him and live our lives for Him.

We create our own golden calves and then ask them to satisfy us in ways only God can. We invest value and love into that which offers us nothing in return, and we make complex what God intended to be so simple. Jesus said he came to not just give us life, but life more abundantly (John 10:10). That is not to say that life will not have challenges and difficulties. But when we believe, live, and act as sons and daughters of the Holy God of Heaven, then we can dwell in the abundance that God has so freely given. Then we will be co-heirs, receiving our inheritance and living as God’s sons and daughters.

Hebrews 1:1-2 NLT Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.

Romans 8:14-17 NIV For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

1 Peter 1:3-4 TPT Celebrate with praises the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has shown us his extravagant mercy. For his fountain of mercy has given us a new life—we are reborn to experience a living, energetic hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. We are reborn into a perfect inheritance that can never perish, never be defiled, and never diminished. It is promised and preserved forever in the heavenly realm for you!

Colossians 1:11-14 TPT And we pray that you would be energized with all his explosive power from the realm of his magnificent glory, filling you with great hope. Your hearts can soar with joyful gratitude when you think of how God made you worthy to receive the glorious inheritance freely given to us by living in the light.

Titus 3:4-7 NIV But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

Ephesians 3:6 NIV This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

Acts 3:25 NIV And you are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.

Galatians 4:6-7 NIV Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

James 2:5 NIV Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?

1 Peter 3:9 NIV Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.
