Psalms 92:12 NIV The righteous will flourish like a palm tree; they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the Lord, they will flourish in the courts of our God.

Springtime is planting season. A time to plant, water, fertilize, and nurture our gardens, flowers, shrubs, and trees. The goal is to produce healthy and hardy plants that are deeply rooted and able to withstand the times of wind or drought that summer may bring. God’s goal for our lives is no different. He calls us to be planted, deeply rooted in Him, bearing fruit and not withering away when times of difficulty come.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 states, ”There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to plant and a time to harvest.” Possibly the most important aspect of being planted in the Lord is understanding the season you are currently walking through. Recognizing our seasons of life and the times of transition—moving from one season to another—is crucial to a life focused on Christ and his faithfulness.

But seasonal transition always starts the same way—with surrender. There is a letting go required to gain peace and fully grasp the blessings of a new season. We often resist when God transitions us from one season of life to another. We dig in our heels, crying out, “This is not what I expected!” Only for God to gently say, “Follow me and you will lie down in green pastures and beside still waters. My goodness, mercy, and unfailing love will follow you all the days of your life” (Psalm 23). Unless we embrace the times when we are completely at God's mercy, we will never fully experience God's faithfulness in every season. This is the essence of abiding in Him (John 15:5).

Planting is not done haphazardly but with deliberate intent and an expectancy. Planting is done with a vision for the future, an expectancy that the shade and fruit provided will be a blessing to those that come after you. The location is carefully selected to maximize the potential for growth, ensuring sunlight and water are in abundant supply and providing adequate room for growth. Your location, life circumstances, and timing are all being used by God to fulfill your God-designed purpose and destiny. Your life is not the collision of random events, but all things are used by God for His glory as you learn to love, trust, and surrender everything to Him (Romans 8:28).

In Psalm 92:12, King David compares us to both palm trees and cedars of Lebanon—certainly a wide contrast. Palm trees represent resilience, longevity, and strength in the face of adverse conditions. Weathering the storms of life with unwavering faith and experiencing personal growth and fruitfulness even in less than ideal conditions. The cedars represent strength, durability, and majestic stature, reflecting the steadfast growth and stability of those who walk in the righteousness of Jesus. But the strength of a tree is not in what you see but what is unseen. The depth and health of the roots, always reaching outward and deeper for greater amounts of water and nutrition. The psalmist is calling out for those planted by the Lord to have both resilience and strength, constantly growing and maturing, being transformed into the character and likeness of our Lord.

What season of transition are you in? Are you trusting and embracing, or resisting? “I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness in this life. Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord” (Psalms 27:13–14). You are planted in the house of the Lord to flourish!

Matthew 15:13 NIV He replied, Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots.

2 Samuel 7:10 ESV And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more.

2 Kings 19:30 ESV And the surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward.

They will be as fragrant as the wines of Lebanon.
