Restore

Psalm 23:3 ESV He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Have you ever tried to complete the full restoration of an antique? It is much more difficult than seems and requires meticulous attention to detail. The word “restore” means to return to original condition and purpose. God is the ultimate restoration specialist, never cutting corners or leaving any detail untouched. His goal is always to return us to His original design and purpose.

The entire life work and ministry of Jesus was to restore. Luke 19:10 proclaims Jesus’ life mission, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” It does not say “those” who were lost but “that” which was lost. His purpose was to restore what sin had stolen in the garden: continual fellowship and intimacy with the Father. In Luke 19:10, Jesus was not just referring to Zaccheus as a lost individual; he was referring to all mankind. Romans 3:10, “There is no one righteous, no not one.” He came to restore righteousness—a right relationship with God the Father. And that took a perfect sacrifice. “Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God.” (1 Peter 3:18). The relationship that was lost due to sin was fully restored through the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus.

In 1 Kings 17 we are introduced to the Shunammite widow and her son, who, during the midst of a terrible drought, found themselves hopeless with just enough oil and flour to make one loaf of bread when Elijah arrived and asked for bread. As they gave their last bread to Elijah, God restored their hope with “a jar of flour that will not be used up and a jug of oil that will not run dry” (1 Kings 17:14). Some time later the son became sick and died, but God miraculously brought him back through Elisha’s prayers. “The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived” (1 Kings 17:22). His life was restored. This is more than a story but fully represents the heart of the Father.

The widow and son received a double restoration of hope and life. Job received double restoration of family, purpose, and provision. Joseph went from prison to the palace when Pharaoh made him the second-in-command in all of Egypt. Israel returned from Babylonian captivity with supernatural provision for all. Joel declared God would “restore the years the locusts have eaten.”

John 10:10 tells us, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, but I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” A deep, intimate, continuous relationship with God, based solely on the finished work of Jesus, never on our own merits; this is the very definition of life. But Jesus also desired to give us “life more abundantly,” and that includes restoring dreams, relationships, and purpose. Proverbs 6:31 says a thief must “restore sevenfold” when caught, and God’s heart is that whenever the enemy steals from His children, He redeems and restores in multiples.

God’s restoration is never about your worthiness—but about God’s character. God’s restoration isn’t mercy you beg for—it’s grace you receive. God doesn’t just restore things, but He restores time itself. The wasted years, lost opportunities, and stolen seasons can all be redeemed. But God’s restoration is not solely for your pleasure and comfort. It is meant to be a living testimony of God’s mercy, goodness, faithfulness, and love. He’s more committed to your restoration than you are.

Whatever has been taken from you, peace, hope, or relationship, God desires to restore. Whether taken unwillingly or through bad choices, God can and will redeem if we only cry out to him, repent, and ask! Just as David prayed, “Restore to me the joy of your salvation,” God can and will restore your hope and all that the locusts have eaten. He will give you life and life more abundantly; just ask.

Psalm 147:3 ESV He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Psalm 51:12 ESV Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Jeremiah 30:17 ESV For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the Lord.

Job 42:10 NIV And the Lord restored the fortunes of Job, when he had prayed for his friends. And the Lord gave Job twice as much as he had before.

Acts 3:19-20 NIV Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you—even Jesus.
