Shepherd

John 10:11 NIV I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
Jesus could have come to earth as anything: a great earthly king, the high priest, a great military leader, or a successful business person, but he chose to call himself a shepherd. Why?
Our modern imagery of a shepherd is often someone sitting quietly, watching over sheep grazing in a green pasture. But the Hebrew word used for “shepherd” paints a very different picture. Rāʿâ (raw-aw') means to actively tend, rule, feed, and be a constant companion. You do not manage sheep by accident but with action, purpose, and intentionality. You watch, you lead, you protect, you deal with straying, you learn to think about the weak and the vulnerable, and you fight off the enemies. That is why, again and again, God uses shepherds and shepherding language to teach us what His care is like. But to receive Jesus as our shepherd, we must first embrace our role as sheep.
Sheep are notoriously prone to wandering and lack a natural sense of direction. Isaiah 53:6 says, “All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way.” Moment by moment, we must choose whether to live by trial and error, often repeating the same painful mistakes, or live by God’s divine guidance. We must first recognize that life unfolds according to God’s timetable and direction, not ours. Without the Lord directing our steps and making our paths straight, we drift away from Him and easily follow the crowds. Psalm 37:23 promises, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.” He leads, going before us to prepare the way (Isaiah 45:2).
Sheep learn to recognize the shepherd's voice and follow his lead. This requires humility, surrender, and a willingness to let go of pride and independence. Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). Our ears must stay continually tuned to the shepherd’s voice. There is a big difference between hearing and listening, and God speaks to those whose ears are tuned to His voice, taking the time to listen. Isaiah 55:3 contains such an incredible promise for those willing to listen. “Listen, and you will find life. I will give you all the unfailing love I promised to David.” David, who knew a lot about being a shepherd, built his life and legacy on listening to God’s voice.
Sheep are not hunters; they trust the shepherd to provide for their every need, to lead them to quiet waters and green pastures, lacking nothing (Psalm 23:1-2). God is our constant provider, intimately aware of every physical, emotional, and spiritual need we have, even before we ask (Matthew 6:8). Rooted in Abraham’s name for God, Jehovah-Jireh, “The Lord Will Provide," this truth calls us to release the desire for control and anchor our trust in His unfailing faithfulness and abundance. "And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." (Phil 4:19).
Sheep have no self-defense; they must trust the shepherd to protect and defend them from all predators and enemies. David demonstrated the role of shepherd by killing the bear and lion that attacked the sheep (1 Samuel 17:36). God is our protector and defender (Psalm 121). He is “my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust” (Psalm 91:1). You are never called to defend yourself or fight a battle alone. God is there fighting for you. Exodus 14:14 promises, “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
To experience His leading, care, and provision of God as our shepherd, we must first trust in Him and surrender our lives to Him as our shepherd. Another opportunity to see the faithfulness and goodness of our Lord, but to receive it, we must lay down everything.

Hebrews 13:20-21 NLT Now may the God of peace—who brought up from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great Shepherd of the sheep, and ratified an eternal covenant with his blood—equip you with all you need for doing his will. May he produce in you, through the power of Jesus Christ, every good thing that is pleasing to him. All glory to him forever and ever! Amen.
Psalms 23:1-3 NASB The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
John 10:14-15 NASB I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep.
John 15:13 NASB Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.
Revelation 7:16-17 NLT They will never again be hungry or thirsty; they will never be scorched by the heat of the sun. For the Lamb on the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes.
Isaiah 40:11 TPT He will care for you as a shepherd tends his flock, gathering the weak lambs and taking them in his arms. He carries them close to his heart and gently leads those that have young.
1 Peter 2:24-25 NASB He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness, for by His wounds you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
1 Peter 5:2-4 NLT Care for the flock that God has entrusted to you. Watch over it willingly, not grudgingly—not for what you will get out of it, but because you are eager to serve God. Don’t Lord it over the people assigned to your care, but lead them by your own good example. And when the Great Shepherd appears, you will receive a crown of never-ending glory and honor.
Ezekiel 34:22-23 TPT I will come and save my sheep and rescue them from being victimized. I will judge between one sheep and another. I will raise up one shepherd over them, like my servant David, and put him in charge of my flock to feed them. He will care for them and be their shepherd.
Ezekiel 34:11-15 NIV For this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. As a shepherd looks after his scattered flock when he is with them, so will I look after my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places where they were scattered on a day of clouds and darkness. I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines, and in all the settlements in the land. I will tend them in a good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel will be their grazing land. There they will lie down in good grazing land, and there they will feed in a rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign Lord.
Micah 5:4 NIV He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.
Psalms 80:1 TPT God-Enthroned, be revealed in splendor as you ride upon the cherubim! How perfectly you lead us, a people set free. Loving shepherd of Israel—listen to our hearts’ cry!
