Able

Ephesians 3:20-21 AMP Now to Him who is able to do abundantly more than all that we dare ask or think, infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen.

How we view God—who He is and His role in our lives—shapes everything about our walk with Him. It shapes how we see ourselves and ultimately forms our worldview, how we see the world, events, and people around us. One of the great obstacles we encounter is humanizing God, placing human limits on a supernatural God. When we face challenges or difficulties, we often determine the possible outcomes only by what seems logical or humanly possible. But until the outcome we expect is better than anything we have seen, heard, or imagined, we are still limiting God to our perspective.

Throughout scripture, God reminds us that He is not a man and cannot be compared to men. “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through?” (Numbers 23:19). “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9). Trying to fit God into our human expectations is certainly contrary to scripture and results in a restrictive and reduced view of God, while elevating man to a level of deity.

Ephesians 3:20 represents the complete and total opposite: “Now to Him who is able to do abundantly more than all that we dare ask or think, infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams.” This is the God we serve! Able to do more than we could ever dream, infinitely beyond our thoughts, and greater than our wildest desires. “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27). Ephesians 3:20 is not a call to try and ‘out imagine’ God, but a call to trust Him in every situation, even those that seem impossible. Not allowing our past experiences or current circumstances to define God’s plan or limit what He will do. This promise in Ephesians is more about defining who God is than what we can expect to receive.

Psalms and Proverbs are filled with instructions and promises concerning the “fear of the Lord.” This fear is never about being afraid but about standing in awe of a God who spared nothing to be in constant relationship with us, who hears our prayers, and who sent his son to be our righteousness. The God who reveals that “eye has not seen, nor ear heard, all that God has for those that love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9). It is being awe-struck with the extravagance of God’s love and provision for us. Psalm 34:19 states, “Fear the Lord, you his holy people, for those who fear him lack nothing.” When we focus on the true subject of these verses, Him who is able, God then exceeds any limit my situation, circumstances, or conditions might tempt me to place on Him.

As born-again Christ followers, the power at work within us is not the power of our imagination, or the fervency of our prayer, or the urgency of our devotion. The power at work within us is the Holy Spirit, the One Who raised Jesus from the dead. When we see that Ephesians 3:20 defines the God who is at work on our behalf and has gone beyond the markers of human imagination to make known His glory not only through His Son, but through us. Fulfilling Habakkuk 2:14, “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.” Our God is able.

1 Corinthians 2:9-10 NLT No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him. But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets.

2 Corinthians 9:8 NIV And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

Psalms 40:4-5 TPT Blessing after blessing comes to those who love and trust the Lord. They will not fall away, for they refuse to listen to the lies of the proud. O Lord, our God, no one can compare with you. Such wonderful works and miracles are all found with you! And you think of us all the time with your countless expressions of love—far exceeding our expectations!

Jeremiah 29:11-13 NIV For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

Psalms 139:17-18 NLT How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me!

Jeremiah 32:17 NIV Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.

Ephesians 1:18-20 NIV I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms.

Psalms 36:7-9 NIV How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings. They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.

Hebrews 13:20-21 NIV Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever.
