Walk

Micah 6:8 NIV What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

Wearable fitness trackers are a big business, a $75 billion per year big business. And for good reason, the benefits of daily walking are numerous: weight loss, reduced risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis, boosting your immune system, and improved mood and mental health. But long before the days of wearable pedometers and fitness trackers, God had been calling us to walk with him.

God is the original walker. Genesis 3:8 tells us, “Adam and Eve heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.” Scripture records that Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, David, Josiah, Amaziah, and Hezekiah all walked with God. Just like keeping a daily routine of physical walking, to walk with God takes time and commitment. It does not happen while whispering a mealtime prayer or as we close our eyes to sleep. When you walk with God, you factor Him into your everyday life and your every decision. You spend time praying and talking with Him throughout the day.

Have you ever tried walking with someone when each person had their own idea of the path and pace? Amos 3:3 asks, “Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?” When we choose to walk with God, we surrender our desires, ideas, and perceptions, allowing God to set the pace and determine the direction. To walk with God means to follow his lead, living life according to His will.

If you have ever had a walking buddy, you know that in addition to the walks, the conversations are deep and wide. No subject is off limits; sharing things that are on your mind and listening to your friend do the same. As a believer in Christ, you can walk with Him through every aspect of life here on earth. The life that pleases God is not a set of religious duties; it is walking with him through life’s journey to hear his voice and obey. In the process of walking with God, meditating on His Word, and listening to His voice, my thoughts, my perspectives, and my emotions come in line with the unchanging character of my Heavenly Father.

Let the truth that God desires to have real, life-transforming conversations with you sink into your heart for a minute. God desires to spend time walking and having unrestrained, life-changing conversations about decisions, relationships, work, finances, your identity, and everything else. God himself wants to talk with you about your life—to fully know you and be known by you, but like any conversation, you will only hear him when you are listening.

Walking with God is a way of life, and it is a choice. Ephesians 4:1 calls to us, “Therefore I implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called.” We can walk in God's ways or the ways of the world, but we cannot do both. Walking with the Lord means you live to please Him and not yourself. When you consistently walk with God, though you are flawed and imperfect, others will be able to recognize that you have been with Jesus.

1 John 1:7 NIV “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” Let’s go for a walk with the Lord today.
