Come to Me

Exodus 24:12 NIV The Lord said to Moses, Come up to me on the mountain and stay here.
The Lord is moving in the hearts of people, stirring us to want more. God is wooing us to accept His open invitation to desire a deeper, more intimate relationship with Him. The same invitation he made to Moses: come to me and stay. Not just visit but stay. An invitation to overcome the grip of sin, shame, and guilt through a blood-bought relationship in Jesus. Emerging with new power, peace, joy, rest, strength, boldness, and courage through the Holy Spirit.
Isaiah 55 begins with, “Is anyone thirsty? Come and drink—even if you have no money! Come, take your choice of wine or milk—it’s all free! Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good? Listen to me, and you will eat what is good. You will enjoy the finest food. Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life.” (v1-3)
God is calling “all who are thirsty.” What does it mean to be thirsty? Just as we cannot survive without fulfilling our physical need for fluid, we also cannot spiritually survive without satisfying our spiritual thirst. Jesus told the woman at the well, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” (John 4:14 NLT). Get in tune with your spiritual thirst.
Isaiah continues, “Why spend your money on food that does not give you strength? Why pay for food that does you no good?” (Isaiah 55:2) There may be no scripture that better reflects our current culture and the emptiness people are living with every day. We often think satisfaction and refreshment will come when we can do whatever we want, when we can gain more for ourselves. But that kind of life has continually left us lacking. Scripture teaches us a different way to live, a way that leads to the life full of satisfaction we thirst for. It starts with responding to His invitation to come; “in His presence is fullness of joy, and in His right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11)
King David proclaimed, “You, God, are my God; earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water” (Psalm 63:1). He was not talking about physical water because he went on to say, “I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory.” David is saying, I have seen you! I have seen your glorious love and power, and I want more. Paul referred to God’s presence as refreshing (Acts 3:19). Like a bowl of ice-cold watermelon on a hot summer day, God’s presence refreshes our soul, bringing us joy and peace that supersedes our surroundings or circumstances.
Isaiah continues, “Come to me with your ears wide open. Listen, and you will find life.” (v3). The Hebrew word used for “come” means to come closer, ascend to a higher place, to lean in like someone trying to hear a whisper. God calls us to experience Him in an up-close-and-personal way. He longs to bring us into a full and intimate relationship. He wants us to take whatever circumstance we are in and says, “Give them to Me.” He longs for us to give Him every burden and problem in total surrender and dependence on Him. As we learn to trust him, we are then able to find peace and rest.
The simple truth is, we are not comfortable with quiet. However, God challenges you to find it in Him. Jesus called the disciples to this kind of quiet: “Jesus said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest’” (Mark 6:31). Open the invitation today, and you will find rest and life.
