Fight

1 Timothy 6:12 NIV Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

If you spend any time reading scripture, you will quickly see that the Christian life is one of spiritual struggles and perseverance. In this letter to Timothy, Paul refers to it as the “good fight of faith,” engaging in a constant battle to hold onto and grow our trust in God, living out our faith in a world that challenges, opposes, and sometimes threatens it. It is a call to endurance, discipline, courage, and intentionality in our spiritual growth. Too often we believe that all is good if I have accepted Jesus as Savior and Redeemer of our life, am somewhat regular in church attendance, and do mostly good things. But Paul’s instruction to Timothy is quite different. “Fight the good fight” is not just hanging on for the promise of heaven but living empowered and victorious all the days God provides.

The Greek word translated “fight” is “agōnizomai,” meaning to contend with adversaries, to struggle in the midst of difficulties, and to strive with strenuous zeal to obtain the goal. We are called to be active participants in our faith, contending not just for ourselves but for the lives of those around us. Praying and living for God to shine the light of his love and grace into our family, friends, colleagues, and those we encounter each day. We are called to influence, not just coexist, to share the good news of Jesus Christ, and to make disciples. We are fighting for people to not just feel loved and accepted, but to fulfill the God-given purpose for which they were created. Praying and fighting for “His kingdom come, His will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10).

A fight always has two combatants, and sometimes you are hit with a punch that leaves you stunned and hurting. But God doesn't send us into the fight unprepared. He offers us armor—truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, and His Word (Ephesians 6:13-18). But notice Paul says "put on" the armor. It's available, but we must purposefully choose to wear it each day. 1 Thessalonians 5:6, 8 NLT reminds us, “So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded. Let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.” The battle is against the spiritual forces of evil, as well as the temptations, doubts, and fears that can lead us away from God. Fighting the good fight requires an intentional effort to be alert, clothed in armor, rooted in truth, and pursuing God’s purpose.

Paul then instructs, “Take hold of eternal life.” We are called to live with an eternal view. Our life is not meant to be controlled by what is seen directly in front of us but by living faith, the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Pride blinds us to our need for God, making us self-reliant instead of God-dependent. When we walk in humility—acknowledging eternal life is our destiny, our need for His wisdom, strength, and mercy—He pours out even more grace. God resists the proud because pride exalts self over Him. But when we humble ourselves, surrendering our will to His, we receive His help, favor, and strength to fight the good fight.

We are called, not to be fans sitting in the bleachers and watching professionals duke it out. Instead, each of us is to lace up the gloves and contend for the faith. Not passively living as a believer, but actively engaged as a disciple of Christ, bearing witness to his love and mercy, taking up our cross daily and fighting the fight of faith. Luke 21:19 NIV “Stand firm, and you will win life.” Join the fight.

Hebrews 10:35-36 NLT So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.

James 1:2-4 NASB Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27 NLT Don’t you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NIV For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

1 Peter 5:10 NLT In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.

1 Timothy 1:18-19 NLT Timothy, my son, here are my instructions for you, based on the prophetic words spoken about you earlier. May they help you fight well in the Lord’s battles. Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.

Ephesians 6:10-12 NLT A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

Philippians 3:12-14 NLT I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.

Hebrews 6:17-18 NLT God also bound himself with an oath, so that those who received the promise could be perfectly sure that he would never change his mind. So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us.

Romans 8:28-30 NLT And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.
