His Word

John 15:7 NIV If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
Prayer is such a privilege. Prayer connects us to God and literally brings the power of heaven to earth! God placed few limitations on how or what we pray, but our prayers—what we pray for, when we choose to pray, how we pray—often reveal much about our heart and its condition. It exposes whether we are praying “thy will be done” or “my will be done.”
Praying God’s Word is the most powerful and effective way to pray, aligning our heart with God’s purpose and desire. We can always pray for grace, mercy, strength, favor, and peace because these are all things He promises to us in His Word—it is His will for us to have these things. But praying God’s Word also protects us during spiritual battle, bringing forth life in the darkest of situations and saving us from the fiery darts of the enemy (Ephesians 6:16). God loves it when we agree with Him and repeat His promises to Him in prayer. Heaven is moved when we pray God’s truth back to Him.
If God’s word is truly a “lamp for my feet and a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105), then it also is to serve as the guide for our prayer life. Read His Word, meditate on it, and let the Holy Spirit speak to you through it, then pray it back to Him. Psalm 46:1-3 states, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” It is in times of chaos and uncertainty we can pray these powerful words and know that God is our refuge and strength. When we pray this way, it changes us, transforms us, and unites our heart with God’s purposes in a most powerful way.
Praying God’s Word takes us to a higher level in our relationship with Him. Our faith increases and rises to a new place in strength. A place where we are agreeing with God and affirming his promises. “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him” (1 John 5:14-15). It aligns our hearts with God and positions us to receive answered prayer and glorify God’s name. We choose to obey God’s Word as we pray it, quieting our heart to listen to the Holy Spirit, meditating on it, internalizing it, and then praying it back to Him.
Jesus told a vivid parable about the power of praying in alignment with God. Luke 18:10-14 states, “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income. But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner. I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” The goal of the Pharisee was to express moral superiority, but when we stand in comparison to God, his holiness, love, grace, and mercy, our only response will be that of the tax collector: “God, have mercy on me.” That is a prayer God rushes to answer.
The key to answered prayer is held in Jesus’s words: “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you” (John 15:7). Let God’s Word transform your prayers.
