Know His Name

Psalms 9:10 NIV Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.

When someone is named a foreign ambassador, they go under the name and authority of the one who sent them. Not with their own ideas and policies, but in every way representing the country and leadership that dispatched them. 2 Cor 5:20, “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ,” makes it clear that we are not here to represent ourselves but the one in whose name we are redeemed.

For all those that have surrendered their life to Christ, have received His free gift of salvation, and invited the Holy Spirit to fill and transform their life, everything we do is to be done in and under His name. We receive His gift of salvation in His name, “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). We worship in His name, “Through Jesus Christ, let us at all times offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of lips that thankfully acknowledge and confess and glorify His name” (Hebrews 13:15). We pray in His name, “And whatever you ask in my name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son” (John 14:13). Everything we need and do flows from His name, “Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalms 124:8). Our lives are no longer about ourselves but about our identity as His adopted sons and daughters. We now carry His name.

There is significance in knowing God by name. To know (Hebrew: yada) means a deeper, intimate, personal relationship and understanding. Not to just know about God but to know His nature, character, reputation, authority, thoughts, feelings, and what pleases Him. God’s name is not just a title but a representation of who He is. This kind of understanding comes from only one source, the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 2:10-11, “But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit.”

So who is this God we represent and carry his name? God described himself to Moses as “the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion, and sin” (Exodus 34: 6-7). The prophet Micha echoed this by describing God as the one who pardons, forgives, and even stomps on our sin, throwing our transgressions into the depths of the sea. One who delights in showing mercy and is filled with compassion (Micah 7:18-19). A far cry from the angry God that He is often portrayed as.

In John 14:14, Jesus makes a bold statement. A promise that men have tried to place boundaries and restrictions on since it was first stated. “You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.” Why was Jesus willing to make such a confident statement? It’s not because tacking ‘In Jesus name’ onto the end of a prayer makes it automatic or turns it into a ‘genie in a lamp’ experience. It means when you ask for something that aligns with His name—the nature, character, reputation, authority, thoughts, and feelings of God—you can be assured that God will answer that prayer.

Get to know God our Father and the authority, strength, compassion, and mercy that is in His name. When you know Jesus as our high priest who understands our weakness and the trials we face; access to the throne of God and His mercy and grace in times of need is a promise (Hebrews 5:15-16).
