Ephesians 2:10 AMP For we are His workmanship, His masterpiece, a work of art, created in Christ Jesus, reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used for good works, which God prepared for us beforehand, so that we would walk in them.
Touring museums is one of the great experiences when traveling. Museums filled with artifacts and works of art that are considered to be priceless masterpieces. But what makes a masterpiece? It’s not just what — it is who — a master makes a masterpiece!
The Greek word used in Ephesians 2:10 is “poiema,” (where we get our English word poem), and what Paul had in mind is a work of masterful creativity. The Holy Spirit, through Paul, selected this word carefully. The only other time in Scripture it is used is in Romans 1:20: “God’s eternal power and divine nature, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made.” Here, it takes five English words to unpack poiema. God’s glory, power, and character are to be seen and experienced through us, His handiworks, workmanship, masterpiece
When God created the heavens and the earth, including all the plants, animals, and creatures of the sea, He stepped back and proclaimed it as good. Every star, mountain, animal, and bird of the air was simply spoken into existence by God’s voice. That is, until day six. For the final and greatest step of creation, God himself reached down and formed man from the dust of the ground and personally breathed into man the breath of life. God used dust, not rich fertile soil, but dust. The word dust is the Hebrew word ʿāp̄ār, which represents rubbish or ashes. He took what is often overlooked and unwanted to create his final masterpiece.
He created man and woman, male and female, He created them. Up to this point, all of creation was done by God. But for the creation of man, He called, “let us make man in our image.” We are made in the full image of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Then he proclaimed it as not just good, but very good, exceedingly and abundantly good. His greatest creative work was forming you and bringing you forth to fulfill His purpose and destiny through your life. God's greatest masterpiece of all creation is you! More significant than the sun, moon, or stars, the highest mountain, the deepest sea, or any animal, you are God’s masterpiece and prized work. Valued so highly, He sent his son to pay the complete price of restoring our full and unbroken fellowship.
There’s a Master at work on you. Your life is a priceless work of art in the Lord’s hand. God’s masterful artistry, His perfect “touch”, is painting and sculpting your life day-by-day to create the masterpiece He desires you to be. Every stroke of the brush, strike of the chisel, and placement of color renders shape to your identity in Him. You can trust His craftsmanship and rely on His artistry because not only is He the consummate Master Artist, but He loves His works.
God created you to do amazing things. We are told in Psalm 139:16 that God's eyes "saw your substance, being yet unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them." God has a plan for your life. God is preparing you for greater things. Whether you are young or living in the 4th Quarter of life, your greatest days are ahead of you. God's masterpiece takes a full lifetime to create!
