Unshakable

Isaiah 54:10 NIV Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken, nor my covenant of peace be removed, says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

Whether consciously or not, we are all on a constant search for certainty. We want to be confident that a paycheck is going to come every two weeks, the car will start when you turn the key, and lights will come on when you flip the switch. But jobs end, cars break down, power outages occur, and many other things we have come to expect are suddenly not there. In fact, there is only one thing in life that comes with unfailing certainty.

Isaiah 54:10 reminds us that everything that can be shaken will be shaken. A biblical principle echoed in Hebrews 12:26-28: “All of creation will be shaken and removed so that only unshakable things will remain. But since we are receiving a kingdom that is unshakable, let us be thankful and please God by worshiping him with holy fear and awe.” There is only one thing that is eternal and unshakable—God’s kingdom, His unfailing love, and His covenant of peace.

God’s unfailing love is not dependent on our performance, worthiness, or actions. God loves you simply because He has chosen to do so. Each of the 26 verses in Psalm 136 ends with the response, “His steadfast love endures forever.” God’s unfailing, steadfast love endures our inconsistencies, remains through our unbelief, and persists during our disobedience; it continues endlessly. God’s love for us is fixed, firm, and constant—regardless of our feelings, our response to him, or our circumstances. Each of these twenty-six emphatic declarations provides a tangible example of God’s unfailing love. He can’t stop loving; it would be contrary to who He is!

In Psalm 89:33-34, God makes this statement: “But I will never stop loving or fail to keep my promises. No, I will not break my covenant; I will not take back a single word I have said." A covenant is not just a mere promise; it’s an unbreakable bond. When God makes a covenant, it is an expression of His authority, an unshakable commitment, and a living, breathing decree. When God promises a covenant of peace, it becomes a shelter for those feeling battered by life’s storms—a divine constant of stability and enduring peace. Isaiah promises us that no matter how much your world may shift and change, God’s promise of peace and unfailing compassion remains unbroken. The mountains and hills symbolize seemingly immovable aspects of the world, representing everything we grasp for security. Yet, even if these foundations crumble, God’s love and covenant of peace will not waver. A love so steady and a peace so profound that today’s chaos pales in comparison.

No matter how unstable the ground beneath you may feel today, or what challenge you are struggling to overcome, remember this: when the enemy whispers that you are sinking, God’s unfailing steadfast love is all you need. In Him, we are unshakable.

Claim the truth of God’s unwavering love. Write out your own history of God’s faithfulness and add, “His steadfast love endures forever,” after each item, and cling to this truth during your struggles. Nothing can endure longer or stronger than God’s love for you and His covenant of peace. The promise of Hebrews 13:5 holds true: God will never fail you.
